PROGRAMMES BY SCHOLASTIC STANLEY GOH, SJ

Experience, Poetry & Spiritual Life

William Wordsworth wrote, 'poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity'.

Poetry as the recollection of intense feelings can be seen as the literary distillation of spiritual experience and a window into the mind and heart of a poet, an author or one who experiences God. This session will attempt to open this window, so that we can gaze upon how mere words are able to capture our imaginations, and put words to spiritual experiences.

It is a reflection by an amateur (one who loves!) who finds poetry deeply moving as matter for prayer and who seeks to share how we might approach poetry and prayer in the Ignatian tradition.

Date: Tuesday, 21 August 2018

Further Up, Further In: A Weekend with the Chronicles of Narnia of C. S. Lewis

Beginning with excerpts from both Scripture as well as from C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, we journey ‘further up’, seeking to deepen our relationship with God while making a journey ‘further in’, seeking ourselves as we respond to our creator.

Through an Ignatian approach to literary texts, it is hoped that retreatants will be able to engage the imagination, mind and heart in their own personal faith journeys.

Dates & Times: Friday, 31 August (7.30pm) - Sunday, 2 September 2018 (5pm)

Contribution: $260 (non-AC), $300 (AC)
