Of Cracks & Caves: a Space for Mercy
“Cracks” and “Caves” are two powerful images in the history of Christian spirituality. According to the Gospel of Saint Matthew, “at the moment [of Jesus’ death], the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split” (27:51). The “cracks” of these “rocks” create a new space for mercy and compassion. As Jesus had taught earlier, “unless a grain a wheat falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24).

Based on the recent experience of a Holy Land pilgrimage, the talk is designed to lead participants to understand and appreciate the grace of Jesus’ death and resurrection in their own lives. More concretely, participants will make an honest inventory of the various “cracks” or brokenness of their lives. From these experiences, they will examine whether these “cracks” or brokenness have led them to be closed up or to create “caves” or spaces for compassion that leads to mercy.
