Ignatian Spirituality

  • Finding God in All Things

  • Listening with a Discerning Heart

  • Choosing to live for the Greater Glory of God

Ignatian Spirituality is based on the personal experience of St Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish nobleman and soldier. Ignatius was the founder of the Society of Jesus, whose members are commonly known as the Jesuits. He developed a way for personal spiritual growth based on his experiences while he was convalescing from a serious leg injury caused by a cannonball explosion while defending Pamplona castle against the French. During the long and painful period of convalescence he experienced a profound conversion. His belief was that God is to be found "in all things" and all human endeavour can be sanctified "for the greater glory of God".

Ignatius, originally named Inigo Lopez de Loyola, wrote down his experiences and organized them into four "weeks" or stages, and gave this retreat to his friends. This programme of prayer and reflection later came to be known as the Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises use Scripture, meditation and contemplation to pray and discern how best to follow Christ and serve God. Ignatian spirituality fosters interior freedom and helps us to become more aware of how God is present in our daily lives and to make good life decisions. It also helps us to develop an intimate relationship with Jesus and with God.
